First things first, happy New Year to everyone! 2016 was one hell of a ride, but thankfully we all made it to 2017 safely. For me, 2016 was a year of exploration. Some of my first time sips from the year include Booker’s Bourbon, Blanton’s Single Barrel, and Don Julio 1942. 2017 started off with a first and unfortunately but probable last time sip with the limited edition and forever sold out Hennessy Master Blender’s Selection No. 1. This was Hennessy’s attempt at creating a bourbon styled cognac to capitalize on this current bourbon brazy market we’re in. They even put it in a square bottle. So, how was it? I had my first shot of it as the clock struck 12 on New Year’s and all I can say is “Sookie sookie!” It was by far the smoothest cognac I’d ever tasted, even more so than the Hennessy Privilege. It didn’t have as strong of a woody flavor you’d get from most bourbons. Hennessy says it consists of candied apricots, delicate spices, and grilled almond. I had 2 more shots of it then a taste of it on the rocks. Each one was progressively better. Highly recommended if you can get your hands on a bottle. Definitely a collector’s item as well. Let us pray for a Selection No. 2. in the future.
